Alba Darabi, Carlinhos Brown, Djamila Ribeiro, Maxwell Alexandre and Rodney William contribute to British-Brazilian co-production about Black Brazilian stories and histories not yet told.
EB is delighted to announce the launch of project 2. Brazil, the untold story on its digital platforms, this Wednesday February 24th, a collection of five documentaries including reflections, performance and video art, which tell powerful stories and histories as examined by Black voices. This independent British-Brazilian co-production and its five films were produced and directed from a distance by the London-based curator and independent cultural producer Everton Barreiro throughout 2020, in light of the pandemic, with interviews and performances conducted in three Brazilian states: Bahia, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
For Brazil, the untold story, the five internationally-recognised intellectuals and artists, Alba Darabi, Carlinhos Brown, Djamila Ribeiro, Maxwell Alexandre and Rodney William analyse their own personal and work trajectories from the perspective of artists and intellectuals working in the global South. They share moving testimonies, experiences and reflections on themes relating to Black identities, African-Brazilian histories, cultural appropriation, notions of Black feminism, structural racism, neo-colonialism, empowerment, visual arts, culture, religion and candomblé.
Contributing Guests
Djamila Ribeiro – political philosopher, author, columnist, professor, black feminist activist – in a rare moment of her career, she summarises her own biography since she was a child, telling the spectator how she was able to challenge Eurocentric discourses in order to be able to research and write about black feminism while in Brazilian academia. Her remarkable stories of success as a Black Brazilian female author of three bestsellers, and her critical reflections on hegemonic feminism, politics, neo-colonialism and structural racism enlighten the documentary.
Alba Darabi – artist and ialorixá (female priest of the candomblé religion) – explains in the documentary film Candomblé, which honours her life, how she was able to leave hunger and Catholicism to embrace the candomblé religion. The actress and ialorixás’s captivating performances and life stories, both in the theatre and the terreiro (place of worship), offer an inspiring view of the world.
Maxwell Alexandre – visual artist – reconstructs his personal and work development as a contemporary visual artist, with a particular focus on three early works which enabled him to pave the way for building a relevant practice, recognised in the international arts circuit. In this piece, he tells how he had to negotiate issues relating to class, race and identity to construct his practice and gain recognition. The documentary is turned into a video art piece featuring a performance, Corrida, produced by the artist during last year’s early lockdown in Brazil.
Rodney William – doctor in social sciences, anthropologist, author, columnist and babalorixá (male priest of the candomblé religion) – talks the spectator through his journey to become a doctor in the social sciences and discusses his most recent book, Apropriação Cultural (Cultural Appropriation). Conversation unpacks issues relating to the history of samba in opposition to Bossa Nova and religious intolerance, unveiling some of the mysteries and ethos that guide the African-base religions in Brazil.
Carlinhos Brown – musician, singer, songwriter and multidisciplinary artist – reflects about the city of Salvador’s historic Candeal area through his personal trajectory living in the area as a youngster. Themes such as religion and spirituality, music, culture, African-Brazilian histories and Brazil’s role in the world are examined by the artist. The documentary highlights his music and paintings which the artist uses in performative acts throughout this piece.
About the Producer and Director
Everton Barreiro – is a London-based creator, independent cultural producer, curator, consultant and author. Born and raised in São Paulo, he studied histories of art, dress and fashion at London’s Central Saint Martin’s with an MA awarded in history of design jointly taught by the Royal College of Art and Victoria and Albert Museum. Leading his own independent digital media and consultancy platform, EB, with a particular focus on art, culture, design, luxury and lifestyle, he has a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to his work practice informed by his highly diverse cultural and professional background.
About the Project
Brazil, the untold story – is an international and independent cultural and multidisciplinary initiative developed, produced and directed by Everton Barreiro. For this first digital edition, the project focuses on the profound intellectual, cultural, religious and artistic contributions that African-Brazilians have historically made to Brazil as a nation. These histories and stories have not yet been told by Black voices whose cultural heritage has been underestimated or neglected in Brazil and ignored by the dominant Global north.

EB tem a honra de anunciar o lançamento em suas plataformas digitais incluindo no youtube, nesta quarta-feira, dia 24, a primeira parte do projeto Brazil, the untold story, uma coletânea com cinco documentários que contam a história ainda não contada do Brasil através da narrativa negra.
Coprodução brasileira e britânica, os filmes foram idealizados, produzidos e dirigidos à distância pelo curador de arte e produtor cultural independente Everton Barreiro, durante a pandemia, em entrevistas e performances realizadas no Rio Janeiro, São Paulo e Bahia.
Para dar vida a Brazil, the untold story, os cinco intelectuais, religiosos e artistas negros brasileiros, reconhecidos internacionalmente Alba Darabi, Carlinhos Brown, Djamila Ribeiro, Maxwell Alexandre e Rodney William narram suas trajetórias pessoais e profissionais, compartilham reflexões, performances e vídeo arte sobre temas como o candomblé e o Candeal na Bahia, apropriação cultural, artes visuais, neo-colonialismo, racismo estrutural e outros preconceitos enraizados na história do país.
Histórias
Djamila Ribeiro – filósofa, escritora, professora e militante pelo feminismo negro – num raro momento de sua carreira, compartilha sua biografia desde a infância, conta como driblou a academia para pesquisar sobre feminismo negro e o sucesso de seu trabalho como escritora e editora da coleção Feminismos Plurais no Brasil e no mundo. A escritora reflete de maneira crítica sobre o feminismo hegemônico, neo-colonialismo e a esquerda institucional brasileira.
Alba Darabi – artista e ialorixá – explica no filme Candomblé, uma homenagem a sua trajetória, como a fome a distanciou do catolicismo e a fez se apaixonar pelo candomblé, resgata sua trajetória no teatro, registra seu lado mãe e sacerdotisa, além de fazer uma emocionante homenagem a filósofa Sueli Carneiro.
Maxwell Alexandre – artista visual – reconstrói sua trajetória disruptiva nas artes plásticas e reflete sobre três obras de sua autoria que influenciaram o início de sua prática nas artes visuais. O documentário transforma-se em um vídeo arte, onde o artista mostra a série performática, Corrida, que informa o seu período de isolamento causado pela pandemia.
Rodney William – doutor em ciências sociais, antropólogo, escritor e babalorixá – narra sua trajetória até conquistar o doutorado, nos apresenta a Exu e mostra como o fenômeno da apropriação cultural está intrinsecamente ligado ao racismo estrutural, com reflexões críticas ao movimento da Bossa Nova e a intolerância religiosa.
Carlinhos Brown – músico, cantor, compositor e artista multidisciplinar – desvenda a história da Bahia ancestral através do bairro do Candeal em Salvador, e explica como seu lado espiritual forjou sua veia artística. O artista reflete sobre o papel do Brasil no mundo, miscigenação cultural e racial, revelando sua obra como artista plástico e presenteando o documentário com sua música.
Sobre o Produtor e Diretor
Everton Barreiro – radicado em Londres, trabalha como criador, produtor cultural independente, curador, consultor e autor. Nascido na cidade de São Paulo, Everton Barreiro vive há 17 anos no Reino Unido, onde estudou histórias da arte e moda na Central Saint Martins, com mestrado em história do design pelo Royal College of Art e o museu Victoria and Albert. Há 3 anos que ele dirige sua plataforma de mídia digital e consultoria, EB, dedicada às áreas das artes, cultura, design, mercado do luxo e lifestyle, com uma visão holística e multidisciplinar à sua prática, informado por sua origem multicultural e carreira diversificada.
Sobre o Projeto
Brazil, the untold story é uma iniciativa multidisciplinar e cultural internacional e independente, idealizada, produzida e dirigida por Everton Barreiro. Para esta primeira edição digital, o foco está nas contribuições culturais, artísticas, religiosas e intelectuais das populações afro-brasileiras que ajudaram a construir o Brasil como Nação, nas histórias que ainda não foram propriamente contadas por vozes negras tanto no Brasil, como no exterior e nas narrativas e produções culturais e intelectuais afro-brasileiras do sul do globo, que ainda não foram adequadamente reconhecidas e consumidas pelo norte global.
